A retail store may need guards, cameras, or both depending on its losses, customer traffic, layout, hours, parking exposure, and history of safety incidents. Cameras are valuable for broad observation, recorded evidence, remote review, and coverage of areas that cannot be watched continuously. Their limits are response and judgment: a camera cannot assist a threatened employee, direct an evacuation, verify a person’s explanation, or manage a live disturbance.

Retail guards should address suspected shoplifting through a written, legally reviewed store policy—not assumptions or improvised confrontation. The officer’s first responsibilities are accurate observation, calm communication, safety, and timely notification of the designated manager or loss-prevention contact. A professional officer maintains a courteous presence, avoids profiling, records objective facts, and does not accuse a customer based only on appearance or vague suspicion.

Security officers can support a shrink-reduction program, but they are only one control and cannot guarantee lower losses. A visible, consistent presence may discourage opportunistic theft and policy violations. Officers can monitor designated access points, observe receiving or closing procedures, check restricted areas under post orders, document unusual activity, and help preserve facts after an incident. Their reports may reveal patterns by time, location, or process.
